Charlotte Patera worked in the field of graphic design as a package designer for leading firms in Chicago and San Francisco. In the '70's she designed needlecraft ideas for national magazines. Then she chose quilting because it offered the most creativity and provided an arena for teaching. publishing and exhibiting. She had five books published but all are out of print. She is now retired from teaching and lecturing.

Much of her work has been inspired by the "molas" of the Kuna Indians of Panama.
