Textiles made by the Fante group of Ghana, developed from the European royal and regimental heraldry for inspiration. Before Ghana's independence, foreigners competed for slaves and gold. These people combined their own ingenuity with the outsider's pageantry for festooning their own festivals and celebrations. Using patchwork, appliqué and embroidery these banners show appealing primitive forms and simplicity.
