I
gave this mola the
arbitrary name of "nuggets". I think each one of these is a
treasured nugget to be savored. |

| This features the cross hatch texture similar to the pajaro mola only here they are revealed within the vertical slits. This one has four layers: a blue foundation layer, a red middle layer and then an orange middle layer with a top layer of black. This cross hatch detail is not found very often. I regard it as very innovative. It strays from the usual plain vertical slits, scattered dots | or triangles to fill in the space. As a multi color mola, it still involves the three steps: 1. OUTLINING THE FIGURE with a cut-through channel; 2. DOUBLE APPLIQUE SIGNIFICANT DETAILS; 3. Cut-through FILL-IN DETAIL over all of the open space so no open space is left unworked. The steps are not done in the same order as the crab and dress mola. |

| Step 1. A layer of red was placed over a blue foundation layer. The four nugget shapes were then cut out of the red and stitched down to reveal them as blue. These red cut-outs were saved to be replaced later in Step 5. | Step 2. At this point the first bit of fill-in detail is begun. Several colored horizontal strips were positioned and appliquéd down between the shapes directly over the red layer. |

| Step 3. Now a middle orange layer was positioned and cut carefully to reveal a narrow edge of the red layer around each nugget. These orange cut-out shapes were saved to be replaced in the final step. Vertical slits were cut and stitched over the strips underneath, to create the first bit of cross hatch fill-in. | Step 4. Four colors were cut and stitched as inlays into each blue shape. so that the blue foundation layer is revealed only as a narrow outline channel between the new addition and the red outline. |

| Step 5. The red shapes cut from the red layer and reserved in Step 1, were then replaced and carefully stitched over each colored shape so that each color is revealed as a narrow outline. The horizontal slits were then cut and stitched over each one. | Step 6. Now a layer of black was added, cut and stitched to reveal the blue channel with its four edges. Vertical slits were cut over the horizontal slits of Step 5 to create the cross hatch texture. Each of the former cross hatch fill in details were also cut and outlined by cutting and stitching the black to reveal the orange layer for an outline. Each corner is finished with a small L shape channel. |

| Step 7. The last step was to replace the orange cut outs left over from Step 3 and stitch them to outline each vertical cut with black. The three steps of a multi color mola were now completed. 1. Outlining the figure; 2. Double appliqué signigicant parts; 3. Fill-in detail. | |
