Stumbling Blocks
© 1992 Charlotte Patera
41" x 48"

This quilt is based on the traditional pattern, "Tumbling Blocks."The contrasting blocks represent the stumbling blocks we all face in life.

Hand negative appliquéd and hand quilted. This is the last quilt I quilted by hand.

Juried into the Studio Art Quilt Association exhibit, Diversity! 1995.

$4500.

Eight years after making this quilt, I found out I had an eye disease, Fuch's Dystrophy, in which the cells of the cornea lining deteriorate. The cells are hexagon shaped. This quilt became a metaphor for the disease. The contrasting blocks represent the cells that are disappearing. The disease is curable with a cornea transplant which is not needed as yet.
