combination molas

This group of molas combines multicolor figures with maze fill-in detail so I call them "combination molas." Instead of the slits, triangles or other tiny detail, a maze is worked in their place to surround the main figure, using the same channel type that outlines the figure. In the mola on the far right, below, the multicolor tulips are worked right into the maze.
bugman
gator
This imaginary figure, the "bugman," is surrounded by a complete channel cut through the top layer of orange over the black foundation layer. He has many colors in his wings but his surroundings are made into a network of cut and stitched black channels
Each of these figures has its own channel of lavender showing through the red top layer. They are then surrounded by the maze network of the same one outline channels.

This medical symbol relates closely to the images used in many molas -- the wings and the intertwined snakes. It is made with many colors but this time the channel surrounding it is made of three outlines. The mola has a layer of red over the middle green layer over the yellow foundation.

back to what is a mola

This is a mola that is not as easy to categorize. It is really like a maze mola with the colored details placed on top of the tulip shapes. This was begun with a top layer of red over the foundation layer of black. It was cut and stitched with channels wide enough to accommodate an inlay of the yellow. This is a very tricky technique because the entire mola is covered with a yellow layer that is cut carefully so it can be stitched within the network of black channels. It is cut by feeling for the stitched under edges beneath it and peeking.
